Iceberg Ideas

  • Fishmonger/Fishmongering — Fishmonger was an early notable author of the SCP Wiki who wrote popular articles, including the Wanderlust series. Fishmonger was known for his abrasive personality. Infamously, after an argument with another user, Fishmonger ragequit the Wiki and demanded that all his articles be removed from the site under threat of legal action. The SCP Wiki staff complied and all of Fishmonger’s works have been removed and largely lost to history, except for some archives. The resulting holes in site’s connected works are a large reason why the SCP Wiki developed a policy of no central cannon. The SCP Wiki staff would honor anyone who wanted their works deleted in this manner until 2021. [1]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-245986/a-sad-day Almost every community of containment fiction/liminal fiction has experienced its own version of Fishmongering, and for some reason seems to be a perpetual wound for the space.
  • First contest — the first contest on the SCP Wiki was started by DrGears in April 2009, based around an image. The winner was Sorts with an article that became SCP-804. It was during this contest that the entry format “[Contest] <username>” showed up, and it was suggested after this contest that the next be based around themes, not an image, which is a tradition carried by the SCP Wiki’s contests to this day. • Gears accidentally the forums — shortly after the SCP moved from EditThis to WikiDot, author and veteran DrGears was messing around with all the new features and trinkets, and almost deleted the forums. [4]https://archive.ph/TzVOS#selection-8651.296-8651.354
  • First “-J”s (on 4chan)   — The earliest 4chan threads featuring “SCP” variations of course had some joke efforts, including a SCP-239 –the designation given to the Communist party,[5]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-4697.0-4745.595 — and SCP-069 — a five-foot tall statue that was both sexually promiscuous and disgusting.[6]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-6995.0-6995.1508 This being 4chan, there was no shortage of incredibly offensive comments in tow.[7]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-7091.0-7091.800

  • Russian branch of Shark Punching Center originally punched catfishes
  • Fritzwillie is the Administrator – The Administrator was tracked down by Harmony as part of her historical work in the SCP community, her interview with him revealed that FritzWillie and The Administrator, previously believed to be two separate people, were one and the same.
  • Mass Edit — In late 2009, SCP Wiki admins decided that there was too much junk and bad writing on the site, so a handful of them went through all the existing articles and decided whether or not they should stay.(9https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-180329/the-mass-edit)) This was not done callously but was according to Dr Gears “a honest and unbiased as possible review of our entries”. A freeze was put on all new articles until this process, called The Mass Edit, was finished a some months later in December 2009. [9]a honest and unbiased as possible review of our entries In the words of DrGears “This needed to happen”. This was a moment of renewed and elevated standards for the SCP Wiki.

  • AWCY? Arms — AWCY? Arms is a loose collective of gun enthusiasts who use 3D printing to print their own firearm components. The group gets its name from the SCP Wiki Group of Interest, “Are We Cool Yet?”. In response to the realization of this group’s existence, the creator of the group in conjunction with the SCP Wiki staff released a statement on the Wiki and their social media accounts condemning the group, demanding that they remove the name of his work, and incorrectly calling their actions illegal. [11]https://www.reddit.com/r/SCP/comments/piildg/regarding_scpinspired_gun_modifications/[12]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-14186693/statement-from-pooryoric-on-awcy The group responded with an official reply, noting that the name was Creative Commons and therefore perfectly legal to use, saying “Yes, a piece of paper commands more respect from us than you.”[13]https://archive.ph/bTTkM

  • Bipolar Guitar — the original article in the SCP-1000 slot. In the early wiki, there were pages created for articles by 100s, as it is done today, except there was a category reserved for all entries with higher numbers than 999 titled “1000+”. [16]https://web.archive.org/web/20090520093924/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/contest-entries Archives of this time show numerous entries in the 1000s, including an SCP-1000 titled “The Bipolar Guitar”.[17]https://web.archive.org/web/20090517122251/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-series#toc12 This article is preserved, is about a guitar recovered from the WTC towers wreckage, that either lets you play it if you are worthy, or drives you insane. [18]https://web.archive.org/web/20080827051445/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-1000
  • Series 11 in 2008 — In the initial site’s “1000+” category, entires existed in the 3000s, 4000s, 5000, and 10000s. [19]https://web.archive.org/web/20090517122251/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-series#toc12
  • SCP Fronts — is a lesser known page on the SCP Wiki made in 2008 made by The Administrator, who wrote “A lot of people were suggesting that the Foundation have a dummy front website that would seem like a normal website, but link back here.” [20]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-89744/scp-fronts). There are only three front companies on this — “Soap from Corpses Products Inc”, “Skeptics of Conspiracy and the … Continue reading[21]http://scp-society.wikidot.com/[22]http://scp-069-j.wikidot.com/ This was initially an admin only page, and on the front page of the SCP Wiki,[23]https://web.archive.org/web/20090520093924/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/contest-entries but was converted to a tale in 2013. Despite being collaborative, the idea has fallen out of favor; no one has added to it since 2013. In 2014, a group of game developer friends announced they were making an actual “school adventure dating simulation game based on” the Sisters of Cheyenne Point. While it never completed, there remains concept art, and the idea was greenlit on Steam, and a Beta version was downloadable for Android. [24]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-781302/we-are-making-the-sisters-of-cheyenne-point
  • I Am A Potato — the later name of Fishmonger [25]http://www.wikidot.com/user:info/i-am-a-potato. Searching the WikiDot for a user by the name of “Fishmonger” gets you a dummy account that hasn’t done anything on the Wiki ever. [26]https://www.wikidot.com/user:info/fishmonger
  • Merry Christmas SCP! — Besides an announcement that the site had been created, the first official staff announcement post on the forums is an in-character roleplaying thread of early site authors and participants about Christmas time. [27]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-113526/merry-scp-christmas
  • Early SCP 4chan anti-raid — In Jan 2010, led by DrGears, there was an initiative for early SCP authors to return to 4chan’s /x/ (where SCP got started) in order to “fix it”. Gears felt as though the quality of /x/ had declined and attempted to rile up the troops to return and post quality creepypastas there. The thread discussing this was titled “Return to the fatherland” and the activity was given the name “Operation EFO Grey Dawn”. This seemingly didn’t amount to anything.
  • WikiDot Logo Oppression — The SCP Wiki suffered having the default WikiDot “W” in its header until sometime in 2010. [28]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-219053/i-forgot-to-announce-this
  • Birth of -EX — The “-EX” designation was created by AdminBright in a contest announcing it, in 2010. [29]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-292582/a-new-contest
  • Democratic contest themes — for the first K-Con, theme ideas were asked for by the staff. [30]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-374722/the-contest-for-the-contest In the suggestion thread, you can see the eventual winner of SCP-1000, thedeadlymoose, lay out a basic premise of their Bigfoot entry. Ideas included major canon turns for the Foundation, such as coming across a larger and more powerful containment organization, or very specific things like the remains of O5-1. A user eventually suggested making the theme very vague, and one word, as to give direction but maximize interpretation and creativity. [31]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-374722/the-contest-for-the-contest#post-1206989 The same was true for the SCP-2000 contest. [32]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-697933/on-the-upcoming-2000-contest Suggestions included Y2K, Foundation mistakes, silly articles, terror, and Gods. The eventual theme, science fiction, was suggested by Scantron, aka CommunismWillWin.
  • Anti-Cross-Links — Cross-linking is the act of referencing and or linking another SCP article. Cross-linking was common in the early days of the Wiki, then banned, and remained banned until 2011 when this restriction was lifted. [33]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-397692/cross-links-new-policy
  • Decommissions — prior to any robust form of quality control for the site, authors used to vandalize and/or write new stories about poorly-written SCP entries, in order to kill them off. These articles were called “decomissions” or “decoms” and were eventually done away with. [34]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-406914/decomms-are-locked
  • Full sandboxes — Sandboxes are the SCP Wiki’s way of having a draft site to keep works in progress. There has been enough content to fill 2 WikiDot sites with drafts, and the site is currently on its 3rd sandbox. [35]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-530798/new-sandbox[36]https://scp-sandbox-3.wikidot.com/
  • Foundation Heritage List — the Heritage List was a collection of older SCP articles that the staff wanted to memorialize in 2013, which would include “classics”. [37]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-685708/scp-foundation-heritage-list-voting-begins-for-inaugural-201 These would be given special privileges, such as not immediately being deleted, were they to ever get below the deletion threshold rating, but have to be rewritten a few times in attempt first.
  • SCPper — a fan-made database of SCP Wiki analytics that was introduced in 2015 by WikiDot user Fifty_Nine. [38]https://scpper.com/[39]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-1076362/scpper-a-browser-extension-for-browsing-scp-now-on-firefox This initially was a browser extension, but has had a dedicated site since 2016.[40]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-1676282/scpper-com-a-site-with-various-statistics-about-scp-wiki Users of the SCP Wiki frequently utilize this tool for upvote totals, article stats,  disciplinary investigations, and even site-backups.
  • Spirit of Eagle — Spirit of Eagle is a Wikipedia user who was active in getting the SCP Foundation it’s own Wikipedia article, which happened in 2015. [41]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-1156633/the-scp-foundation-now-has-a-wikipedia-page
  • Since 2016, SCP Wiki users who delete their accounts will also have all their given upvotes and downvotes removed from articles. [42]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-2026983/slight-vote-changes
  • SCP Explained — SCP Explained is a SCP Wiki clone that gives brief descriptions and explanations of many SCP articles. It was created and managed by WikiDot users Dexanote and Decibelles in 2017, and continues to get additions to this day. [43]http://scpexplained.wikidot.com/start
  • Visual Records — Visual Records is an SCP Wiki sister site (alongside The Wanderer’s Library) that is meant to house SCP fuel that is CC-compliant. The site featured user-created iamges, as well as a nice collection of off-site image repositories as well. [44]http://visual-records.wikidot.com/
  • Protected articles — A new category of articles on the Wiki, a “protected” category, was created in 2018 in response to a politically-motivated downvote raid on an SCP article, SCP-2721. This page is the only SCP article to ever receive a protected status.[45]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-6240030/protected-status-pages-what-and-why
  • SCP Staff Were Wrong About SCP-2721’s Raid — at numerous times in IRC, in official statements, and in on-site discussion, the SCP Wiki staff call the influx of downvotes to politically controversial article SCP-2721 as originating from an outside force. [46]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-6240030/protected-status-pages-what-and-why The belief that a hostile group from outside the SCP Wiki who came in to downvote the article was a fundamental justification and reasoning for protecting SCP-2721. However, an assessment and extensive investigation of those who downvoted SCP-2721 would show this to be false, and that most if not all downvotes came from pre-existing site members. This is further corroborated by the fact that the Staff locked the Wiki’s new applications, and the rating of SCP-2721 continued to drop at the same rate.
  • Staff Investigate SCP-2721 downvotes — the SCP Wiki staff created documents that traced all individuals who voted on SCP-2721. This list included the application date, voting history, and what other WikiDot communities these voters were a part of — with particular notice for RPC Authority members. This document proves without a shadow of a doubt that the raid upon SCP-2721 was not caused by an outside force that made new accounts in order to downvote it, but rather the controversy drew attention to a niche article that went more mainstream, and the general reaction to this article after was negative. Despite this proof, the SCP Wiki staff have never retracted or corrected their statements, and the page continues to be in the protected category, immune to potential deletion.[47]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-6240030/protected-status-pages-what-and-why
  • Staff silently opened up SCP-2721 to voting again in March 2019 — Nearly a year after the SCP-2721 controversy, the SCP Wiki staff silently re-opened voting by removing SCP-2721’s protected status. This can be proven by looking at the SCPper entry for SCP-2721 and noticing the most recent votes, which occur in March 2019. If one counts the net total of votes for this day, it is overwhelmingly negative. Those voting on this day included known community members, again indicating that the decline of SCP-2721 is a community-backed decision. Once the article dropped more, the staff quietly re-protected it.
  • You cannot discuss SCP-2721 — SCP-2721’s discussion page was locked during the controversy, and was re-opened once the heat died down. However, the discussion was inflammatory enough for site admin’s to re-lock the discussion in March 2019, and it has not been unlocked since. [48]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-6240030/protected-status-pages-what-and-why#post-4336368[49]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-6240030/protected-status-pages-what-and-why#post-3851098

  • Domain swap — In 2020, the SCP Wiki changed its domain name from “scp-wiki.net” to “scpwiki.com”. In archives like the Wayback Machine, substituting the original “scp-wiki.net” opens up a ton of more and older hits. [52]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-13606439/domain-transition-announcement
  • Logo trademark — In 2019, the SCP Wiki announced in an emergency fashion that a rogue Russian WikiDot user named Andrei Duksin had performed an illegal copyright of the SCP Wiki logo. This was illegal because the logo, like all content from the SCP Wiki, is automatically Creative Commons. This resulted in a community-wide fundraising campaign for legal defense funds which totaled to over $160,000.[53]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-11572837/announcement-regarding-ongoing-license-violation[54]https://www.gofundme.com/f/scp-legal-funds
  • IRC move — in 2020, the SCP Wiki migrated away from their IRC chat network and onto a new self-hosted one, called SkipIRC. This gave all IRC chat network admins IRCop privileges, including a host of new and improved features, but also the viewing of participant IP addresses and registered email addresses.
  • The Harmony Report — a report compiled by ex-SCP Wiki Administrator pixelatedHarmony that detailed and collected evidence and information on unsavory and inappropriate interactions between ex-SCP Wiki Administrator and long-time veteran of the site AdminBright and other members of the site. AdminBright was long known to be somewhat of a sex pest, but nobody took any action for years. This report was sent to the SCP Wiki staff and was ultimately what tipped the scales, causing them to permanently ban AdminBright for inappropriate behavior.[55]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-886884/harassment-team-log-of-bans#post-5307060[56]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/harmony-s-report
