The Society for Containment Fiction (SCF)

The Society for Containment Fiction (SCF) is a Discord server and loose social group that is largely considered an antagonist force in and to the containment fiction space. It acts as a hub for cross-community discussion, as well as the group’s related projects. The founder has described the community as “a group of people studying the genre that includes SCP, RPC, the Backrooms, the Liminal Archives, and others – containment fiction [and liminal fiction, respectively].”[1]https://archive.ph/7VNPe#selection-1785.67-1785.202

The SCF is known for alternative opinions, combative rhetoric, digital archaeology and archival, platform-independent containment fiction, media & art, and in-depth coverage of the containment fiction space. Despite having central gathering points, the group resists any central ideology or philosophy, preaches inclusion (including SCP), and prioritizes both individualism and the larger commonalities to all in the containment fiction space.

History

SCF & Discord Server

The SCF was created by ex-SCP Wiki author and ex-Administrator pixelatedHarmony on 5/28/2021 as a means for like-minded outcasts and dissidents from the SCP Wiki space to congregate on an independent platform, and in order to escape the reliance and reputational association with their prior forum of coordination, the SCP Foundation thread in Kiwifarm’s Off Topic (Multimedia) board.[2]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/ends-justice-and-means

Containment Fiction Wiki

The Containment Fiction Wiki was the first project of the SCF. It features contribution from writers, historians, and digital archaeologists such as Cooldude971, pixelatedHarmony, Lack of Lepers, Salt Blossom, and others. Wiki pages are often the result of multiple authors working collaboratively.

The Containment Fiction Wiki was initially on the wikifarm Mirahaze.[3]https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://containmentfiction.miraheze.org/* Similar to the initial Confic Magazine on Medium, the project changed platforms to become more censorship-resistant after the host site flagged it for deletion due to violations of the terms of service:[4]https://www.conficmagazine.com/news-1/confic-magazine-sister-project%2C-confic-wiki%2C-attacked-%26-moved

Hi PixelatedHarmony,
As the requesting wiki bureaucrat for containmentfictionwiki, I’m contacting you to advise you that, following e-mail complaints to the Steward team, in which a parallel complaint was also forwarded to us by the Trust and Safety team, Stewards have reviewed your wiki with respect to compliance with Content Policy, and other global policies, and found a number of violations.
Among our findings, we’ve observed:
  1. A number of pages that write in an overly negative, disparaging, and derogatory fashion about Internet users, and which seem to have been set up to harass them; and,
  2. A large number of private IRC chat room logs, have been published publicly, without the consent of all parties those private chat IRC chat room discussions. This is a serious problem from the perspective of copyright, as well as Privacy Policy, another global policy.
Additionally, Stewards, again following the private report from multiple third parties, also took note of several of your wiki’s users apparently involved with Kiwi Farms, a site with a rather dubious reputation.
Finally, it’s worth noting that your wiki appears to be operating contrary to your stated purpose and scope of being a fictional literature/worldbuilding wiki, given the aforementioned.[5]https://archive.vn/oRzyd
The complaints were not appealed by the SCF members, instead using it as an impetus to become more independently platformed. From an official statement on the event:
“Miraheze seemed like it wasn’t dissimilar to the WikiDot markup and their stated goals seemed to dovetail with our own. It is unfortunate that the nuance and details of this case weren’t considered more closely & objectively, and we are sad to be informed that we are not welcome on Miraheze for these reasons. A case of true information that painted individuals in a deserved and bad light was here misinterpreted as baseless harassment. However, we understand and wish Miraheze the best. We encourage any containment fiction community to consider them for future platforming, given that attention is paid to the cultural sensitivities there, and the rules abided by. We hope this has been an educational experience for others besides just us.
All in all, this was a tickle that we needed; the goal was always to be in the independence of a dedicated site. The raiders, for lack of a better term, have helped us get there quicker and with more inspiration than we would otherwise have. So, thank you to them for the nudge.”[6]https://archive.vn/Nfolu

Confic Magazine

Confic Magazine was created September 2nd, 2021[7]https://archive.vn/ID4Kv and was established as an LLC on October 4, 2021.[8]https://archive.vn/q8ofT[9]https://www.conficmagazine.com/news-1/the-brief-timeline-of-confic-magazine-llc- Until late 2022, it released monthly ledgers of its business activity, including the dollar amount of founder donations, expenses with receipts, and current bank account levels.[10]https://www.conficmagazine.com/ledgers This was done as part of “Transparency & Accountability Protocols”, the point of which was to increase “the rational demand to have proper and open stewardship of freely-donated, community funding.” [11]https://archive.vn/JkBML[12]https://archive.vn/GcCKG[13]https://web.archive.org/web/20221001064053/https://www.conficmagazine.com/about The transparency protocols utilized Bitcoin and a publicly-viewable multi-signature wallet as a means to ensure theoretically donated money would arrive in the stated location, and that no one person had absolute control over collected donations.[14]https://web.archive.org/web/20220528081418/https://www.conficmagazine.com/_files/ugd/d55c7d_c5032dd59e3d4b89a0344845fe3e3c14.pdf[15]https://web.archive.org/web/20221002130419/https://www.conficmagazine.com/f-a-q The transparency protocols have since been suspended with the website stating “We made our point, darnit!”[16]https://www.conficmagazine.com/ledgers

Confic Magazine was initially a Medium blog with several co-contributors.[17]https://medium.com/confic-magazine After Medium temporarily suspended the Lack of Lepers blog (also on Medium) in October 2021 after posting leaks of staff chat,[18]https://archive.vn/iRlV4#selection-1643.0-1692.3[19]https://www.conficmagazine.com/news-1/lack-of-lepers-personal-blog-redux-incoming the magazine transitioned to an independent hosting platform, where it resides today.[20]www.conficmagazine.com

Confic Magazine deleted its Twitter on January 22, 2023.

Criticism & Controversy

Due to the core group’s initial website of collaboration (KiwiFarms), and because of its founding by a member banned by the Anti-Harassment Team of the SCP Wiki,[22]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-886884/harassment-team-log-of-bans#post-4902656 as well as other active members who have been banned from SCP and/or who participate in other containment fiction communities,[23]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-886884/harassment-team-log-of-bans#post-5015600[24]https://archive.ph/vZJxv the SCF is largely viewed negatively by a majority of the space and is often the subject of community-affiliated criticism. A majority of individuals from the SCP Wiki regard the term and those associated with it with disdain, with some suggesting that any who use the term, or any who are involved in projects that use the term, are malicious, frequently with the claim that they are “doxxers”.[25]https://archive.ph/lQEYN[26]https://archive.ph/s9h3E[27]https://archive.ph/GW5kP[28]https://archive.ph/5Es31[29]https://archive.ph/x63q6[30]https://archive.ph/6wSNZ[31]https://archive.ph/BnwgO[32]https://archive.ph/IF9lF Members of the SCP community can be seen actively discouraging individuals from promoting or giving attention to any products created by the SCF and shame SCF members for being “openly hostile to SCP at times”.[33]https://archive.ph/whg5J[34]https://archive.ph/KuvLN#selection-3541.10-3541.45

Material from SCF is largely counter-cultural, and commonly levels criticisms at numerous containment fiction communities.[35]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/in-defense-of-the-backrooms[36]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/a-case-of-ze-said-she-said[37]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/a-question-of-personal-identity-who-do-our-flags-stand-for[38]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/who-is-afraid-of-the-big-bad-rpc[39]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/stone-cold-power-the-2020-scpd-discord-server-coup-d-%C3%A9tat-declassified[40]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/the-slow-self-strangulation-of-the-rpc-authority-a-breakdown[41]https://lackoflepers.medium.com/letter-to-the-editor-how-we-were-duped-into-celebrating-scp-173s-image-removal-9061589093a1

Members of the SCF note in defense that their actions are largely critical and not malicious, that most of the ire directed towards them is due to their dissidence rather than the veracity of accusations leveled against them.[42]https://lackoflepers.medium.com/scp-thinks-its-shit-dont-stink-ace54cc79da[43]https://web.archive.org/web/20230122154153/https://twitter.com/ConficM/status/1532872184246452224?s=20&t=Dxi4sgQCeqV5KZBIwa7SsA They also maintain that KiwiFarms was — prior to the creation of the SCF and its platforms — the only available means of public coordination and free speech for dissidents of the SCP Wiki, particularly with regards to whistleblowing what they perceive to be unaddressed injustices.[44]https://archive.vn/iRlV4#selection-543.0-543.527 SCF members also note that it is not fair or correct to judge someone by the culture or context of their project’s creation, and that allowing someone or something to evolve beyond its circumstances at birth is a courtesy given to and proclaimed by the SCP Wiki itself regarding its origins on 4chan.[45]https://archive.vn/C4i0f[46]https://lackoflepers.medium.com/losing-the-plot-part-4-scps-toxic-maximalism-ft-dr-clef-91c93d32d99f Additionally, numerous members of the SCF are incongruous with the political philosophies associated with KiwiFarms, with notable members being LGBTQ+, and the Discord server promoting inclusion and tolerance. Founder pixelatedHarmony has released a Confic Magazine article on the topic of her past association with the site,[47]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/ends-justice-and-means as has Lack of Lepers on his blog.[48]https://lackoflepers.medium.com/scp-staff-thank-kiwifarms-2e472c1e1e86

The accuracy of posts on Confic Magazine have been questioned. Members of the SCF have clarified that the magazine is meant for opinion pieces and editorials, and that the Containment Fiction Wiki is the designated project for facts and claims backed by exhaustive citations.[49]https://archive.vn/xlaVI

Numerous SCF individuals are permanently banned from both the SCP Wiki, and its social media spaces for on-site and off-site behavior.[50]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193190/discord-almarduk-8967[51]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15156225/discord-krim-6231[52]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15165823/discord-doctor-mirray-yt-8697[53]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193289/discord-lack-of-lepers-4145[54]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15156030/discord-alter-ergo-5761[55]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193270/discord-pixelatedharmony-3986[56]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-886884/harassment-team-log-of-bans#post-5015600[57]https://archive.ph/vZJxv The official SCP Wiki Discord’s staff have permanently banned individuals for participating in the SCF (“close association with AHT-banned individuals”) and who have no other infraction on record with respect to SCP Wiki or SCP Discord rules.[58]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193300/discord-medjet-6755[59]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193224/discord-extasis-es-8490[60]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193195/discord-professor-pufferfish-0077[61]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15155924/discord-fernlom-3537 SCF members have called this an injustice, and advocated for more nuanced moderation, and argued that individuals should be judged by their actions, and not the actions of others or those that overlap in social gathering places.[62]https://lackoflepers.medium.com/losing-the-plot-part-4-scps-toxic-maximalism-ft-dr-clef-91c93d32d99f At least two members have been told that their inclusion in the SCP Wiki and its social media spaces is contingent upon them leaving the SCF Discord.[63]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-14352139/disciplinary-drkaldahl-drharick-gnomedome[64]https://archive.vn/s1xTb#selection-881.0-881.163[65]https://archive.vn/Tzzg1#selection-765.0-765.328

In October 2021, the Lack of Lepers blog posted leaked staff chat snippets that displayed the SCP Wiki staff saying phrases that they have banned members of the userbase for.[66]https://archive.vn/G83gY[67]https://archive.vn/G83gY#selection-553.0-553.156 Shortly after its posting, the blog’s host Medium took down the blog for investigation due to a violation of its terms of service.[68]https://archive.vn/tIrGC The post was modified to remove the leaks and the blog was restored.[69]https://archive.vn/iRlV4#selection-1643.0-1692.3

“Anti-SCP”

The SCF has a reputation as being “anti-SCP”. While commonly featuring individuals disillusioned with an SCP-dominated paradigm for containment fiction, this disapproval is not homogeneous among members of the SCF, nor is it all-encompassing of the SCP Wiki, where present. This is evidenced by the inclusion and equal treatment of SCP members, the sharing and praising of SCP articles in the Discord and in projects such as Confic Magazine, and the recognition that the SCP Wiki is by far the dominant and most important containment fiction community.[70]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/looking-over-u-shoulder

One blogger in the SCF has stated of the group:[71]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/on-agent-jackrabbit

There is no “we” here, only individuals.

If there is a “we”, then we do not collectively plug our individualities into a political bloc, so there is no “right script” to parrot. We are not fooled by outward signs of community pride because we do not allow such superficial things to define us. We do not censor any information, so there is no articles of community faith when it comes to who should be disliked or why. We do not ban for mistakes or unperson someone for holding a particular position.

Nobody is beneath having their opinions expressed and nobody is above having those opinions criticized. Different and dissenting opinions will be allowed. What we do is let people share their opinions, smart or dumb, and crush their balls with our metaphorical foot if they are dumb. We are not afraid of bad ideas; ours is a place where bad ideas come to die.

We respect that, and we will have integrity with that. Our spaces will thus be more heated and make people feel uncomfortable because of it. Without the possibility of discomfort, or that integrity of freed thought, the situation quickly devolves into a lackey presentation, where everybody’s walking on eggshells trying to avoid offending someone, or being very fearful of a sort of instant cancel culture.”
