The Society for Containment Fiction (SCF) is a loose social group within the containment fiction space founded by pixelatedHarmony. It functions as a hub for cross-community discussion and related projects. The founder has described the community as “a group of people studying the genre that includes SCP, RPC, the Backrooms, the Liminal Archives, and others – containment fiction [and liminal fiction, respectively].”[1]https://archive.ph/7VNPe#selection-1785.67-1785.202
The SCF is known for alternative opinions, digital archaeology and archival, platform-independent containment fiction, media & art, and comprehensive coverage of the containment fiction space. Despite having central gathering points, the group resists any unified ideology, advocates for inclusion, and prioritizes both individualism and the broader commonalities shared across the containment fiction landscape.
Projects
The SCF has developed and maintained numerous projects, including:
- Containment Fiction Wiki
- Confic Magazine
- Confic Call-In (Podcast) (concluded)
- SCP META (Twitch) (concluded)
- AOEL Database
- INDIECON (concluded)
- Various blogs, vlogs, and YouTube channels maintained by members
- SCF Discord Server
Criticism & Controversy
Due to the core group’s initial website of collaboration (KiwiFarms), and its founding by a member banned by the Anti-Harassment Team of the SCP Wiki,[2]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-886884/harassment-team-log-of-bans#post-4902656 along with other active members who have been banned from SCP and/or participate in other containment fiction communities,[3]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-886884/harassment-team-log-of-bans#post-5015600[4]https://archive.ph/vZJxv the SCF faces significant negative perception within the broader containment fiction community. A substantial portion of individuals from the SCP Wiki regard the group and its associates with disdain, with some suggesting that those who use the term or participate in related projects harbor malicious intent, often claiming they engage in doxxing.[5]https://archive.ph/lQEYN[6]https://archive.ph/s9h3E[7]https://archive.ph/GW5kP[8]https://archive.ph/5Es31[9]https://archive.ph/x63q6[10]https://archive.ph/6wSNZ[11]https://archive.ph/BnwgO[12]https://archive.ph/IF9lF
Members of the SCF maintain that their actions are primarily critical rather than malicious, arguing that the hostility directed toward them stems from their dissidence rather than the validity of accusations made against them.[13]https://web.archive.org/web/20230122154153/https://twitter.com/ConficM/status/1532872184246452224?s=20&t=Dxi4sgQCeqV5KZBIwa7SsA They also assert that prior to the creation of the SCF and its platforms, KiwiFarms was the only available venue for public coordination and free expression for SCP Wiki dissidents, particularly regarding whistleblowing what they perceive as unaddressed injustices.[14]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/ends-justice-and-means[15]https://archive.vn/iRlV4#selection-543.0-543.527 This was borne out in the eventual ousting and ban of AdminBright, as well as others, such as Wikdot user Agent Jackrabbit.
Multiple SCF members have been permanently banned from both the SCP Wiki and its associated social media platforms for on-site and off-site behavior. The official SCP Wiki Discord staff have permanently banned individuals for participation in the SCF (“close association with AHT-banned individuals”), even those without other infractions on record regarding SCP Wiki or SCP Discord rules.[16]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193300/discord-medjet-6755[17]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193224/discord-extasis-es-8490[18]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15193195/discord-professor-pufferfish-0077[19]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-15155924/discord-fernlom-3537 At least two members have been informed that their inclusion in the SCP Wiki and its social media spaces is contingent upon leaving the SCF Discord.[20]http://05command.wikidot.com/forum/t-14352139/disciplinary-drkaldahl-drharick-gnomedome[21]https://archive.vn/s1xTb#selection-881.0-881.163[22]https://archive.vn/Tzzg1#selection-765.0-765.328
“Anti-SCP” Reputation
The SCF has acquired a reputation for being “anti-SCP”, and is often considered antagonistic to the SCP Wiki, particularly by those within the SCP Wiki community. While it commonly includes individuals disillusioned with an SCP-dominated paradigm for containment fiction, this sentiment is neither homogeneous among SCF members nor universally directed at the SCP Wiki.[23]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/looking-over-u-shoulder
According to one SCF blogger:
“There is no ‘we’ here, only individuals. If there is a ‘we’, then we do not collectively plug our individualities into a political bloc, so there is no ‘right script’ to parrot. We are not fooled by outward signs of community pride because we do not allow such superficial things to define us. We do not censor any information, so there is no articles of community faith when it comes to who should be disliked or why. We do not ban for mistakes or unperson someone for holding a particular position.”[24]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/on-agent-jackrabbit
Trivia
- The SCF was created by ex-SCP Wiki author and ex-Administrator pixelatedHarmony on May 28, 2021. It was established as a gathering place for like-minded individuals who felt marginalized from the SCP Wiki community, and to establish independent forums of coordination and collaboration.
- Many of the founding members of the SCF previously coordinated with one another via the SCP Foundation thread in Kiwifarm’s Off Topic (Multimedia) board.[25]https://www.conficmagazine.com/post/ends-justice-and-means
- The Containment Fiction Wiki was initially hosted on the Miraheze wikifarm.[26]https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://containmentfiction.miraheze.org/* Similar to Confic Magazine’s early iteration on Medium, the project migrated platforms to establish greater censorship resistance after the host site flagged it for deletion due to alleged terms of service violations.[27]https://www.conficmagazine.com/news-1/confic-magazine-sister-project%2C-confic-wiki%2C-attacked-%26-moved
- Members of the SCP Wiki staff flagged the original Miraheze Confic Wiki for featuring leaked chat logs of staff members. The complaints were not challenged by SCF members, who instead used the situation as motivation to develop independent hosting. From an official statement regarding the incident: “Miraheze seemed like it wasn’t dissimilar to the WikiDot markup and their stated goals seemed to dovetail with our own. It is unfortunate that the nuance and details of this case weren’t considered more closely & objectively, and we are sad to be informed that we are not welcome on Miraheze for these reasons. A case of true information that painted individuals in a deserved and bad light was here misinterpreted as baseless harassment. However, we understand and wish Miraheze the best. We encourage any containment fiction community to consider them for future platforming, given that attention is paid to the cultural sensitivities there, and the rules abided by. We hope this has been an educational experience for others besides just us.”[28]https://archive.vn/Nfolu
- Until late 2022, Confic Magazine published monthly ledgers of its business operations, including founder donations, itemized expenses with receipts, and current bank account balances.[29]https://www.conficmagazine.com/ledgers This practice was implemented as part of “Transparency & Accountability Protocols” intended to address “the rational demand to have proper and open stewardship of freely-donated, community funding.”[30]https://archive.vn/JkBML[31]https://archive.vn/GcCKG[32]https://web.archive.org/web/20221001064053/https://www.conficmagazine.com/about The transparency measures utilized Bitcoin and a publicly-viewable multi-signature wallet to ensure donated funds reached their stated destination, with no single individual maintaining absolute control over collected donations.[33]https://web.archive.org/web/20220528081418/https://www.conficmagazine.com/_files/ugd/d55c7d_c5032dd59e3d4b89a0344845fe3e3c14.pdf[34]https://web.archive.org/web/20221002130419/https://www.conficmagazine.com/f-a-q These protocols have since been suspended, with the website stating “We made our point, darnit!”[35]https://www.conficmagazine.com/ledgers
- Confic Magazine was established on September 2, 2021[36]https://archive.vn/ID4Kv and registered as an LLC on October 4, 2021.[37]https://archive.vn/q8ofT[38]https://www.conficmagazine.com/news-1/the-brief-timeline-of-confic-magazine-llc-) Confic Magazine concluded its Twitter presence on January 22, 2023, and again in April 2024 after briefly being used … Continue reading
- Confic Magazine initially operated as a Medium blog with several contributors.[39]https://medium.com/confic-magazine After Medium temporarily suspended the Lack of Lepers blog in October 2021 following the posting of leaked staff chat logs,[40]https://archive.vn/iRlV4#selection-1643.0-1692.3[41]https://www.conficmagazine.com/news-1/lack-of-lepers-personal-blog-redux-incoming the magazine transitioned to independent hosting, where it remains today.
- Members of the SCF have denied the accusation of doxxing, which was used to ensure their permanent bans from the SCP Wiki via the Anti-Harassment Team.[42]https://pixelatedharmony.tumblr.com/post/648176391597195264/if-you-see-harmonys-latest-post-yes-their-is[43]https://lackoflepers.medium.com/125-hot-takes-to-go-da5d38a5ac53#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20evidence,owes%20him%20an%20apology.
