SCP-519 (Non-Viable)

The initial SCP-519 was an early SCP posted to 4chan’s /x/ board that foreshadowed many traits for the genre of containment fiction. It was posted in thread #446184 on January 19, 2008.[1]https://archive.ph/aHUf5 As collection of SCPs didn’t begin until a later thread, SCP-519 was among many early entries that were not reposted in subsequent threads, and so were not available to be ported to EditThis upon its creation.[2]http://web.archive.org/web/20080409210737/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[3]http://web.archive.org/web/2/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-519 Its author is unknown.

History & Contributions

The first SCP-519 was an anomalous human featuring grotesque body horror as a result of involuntary surgery.[4]https://archive.ph/aHUf5#selection-187.9-187.24 It is described as a “Code White”, foreshadowing a system of supplemental containment procedures that would later find manifestation in the SCP Wiki French branch’s threat-level system,[5]http://scp-int.wikidot.com/niveaux-de-menace-des-objets-scp and partially in the RPC Authority.[6]http://rpcauthority.wikidot.com/object-classes

It also featured a “Epsilon-class” and “Gamma-class” designation for the innominate containment facility, which did not survive as official object classes into the genre’s later maturity.[7]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/a-history-of-object-classes The use may however represent an initial cleavage and separation of the budding “object class” component of the genre from simply being included within the description, which would later come to explicit fruition between February and March 2008 on EditThis.[8]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/472986.xml, archive[9]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/503107.xml, archive[10]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/521883.xml, archive[11]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/503107.xml, archive[12]https://archive.ph/dB65f#selection-1011.0-1011.478[13]https://web.archive.org/web/20080617060229/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-010 Greek letters would also later be adopted by the RPC Authority in their object class designations.[14]http://rpcauthority.wikidot.com/object-classes

This SCP-519 was also the first SCP to cross-link, or mention other SCPs in its documentation, a trend that would be ubiquitous in later /x/ threads, and by the time EditThis was created.[15]https://archive.ph/aHUf5#selection-187.208-187.244 Additionally, a section executes the first use of what would later be called “meta” composition, foreshadowing pataphysics:[16]https://archive.ph/aHUf5#selection-371.310-371.546

“Inquiries into SCP-519 are to be posted in thread on /x/ folder of 4chan server within the next two hours and will each be promptly responded to. Please follow appropriate communicatory protocol when conducting and posting such queries.”

The structure of SCP-519 was also novel and included more formalized sections to the documentation by using formal headers for the facility the anomaly is contained at, the anomaly’s physical capabilities and metrics, research priority, common activity, etc. The containment procedures are also notable for their reinforced use of the passive voice, and more targeted use of grammar.

Trivia

A note at the end of a supplemental post to this SCP entry on /x/ foreshadows the later diversification of SCP Foundation personnel into specialized departments:[17]https://archive.ph/aHUf5#selection-715.528-715.624

“Note: Consider expanding specialty of SCP personnel to include decryption, including semanticism.”
